<en>Works fine w/FreeBSD and Ghostscript 6.0 and ljet2p driver networked via NT/lpd, haven't used direct attach. Economical Laser/Scanner copier w/20k page life on Drum and 6k pages on high cap toner cart for a total consumable cost of ~2 cents per page drum scanning is almost certain to not work.
Parallel or USB connector.

Brother publishes proprietary Linux drivers for CUPS and LPD for
most of their laser printers and multi-function devices, including
SANE drivers for the scanners. They can be downloaded free of
    charge on their Linux driver
    page.

Consumables/Refills: Seperate Drum and Toner, Low & High Cap - ~$140 Drum, ~$90 Toner
